There is no denying the fact that we are attracted by other languages and cultures, and do not bother about our own. Today's generation do not express any interest in the language due to the influence of their 'modern' school and parents, who have told them that "Speaking Punjabi is not good, as it is insulting, so they should speak in English or Hindi.",
Hence,to acknowledge the role of Punjabi as Mother tongue , Punjabi Essay Writing Competitions are being conducted in various schools with the support of Punjabi Jagran and Bhai Pal Singh France ,representative of Darbar-e-Punjab organization. In this series, an Essay Writing Competition was held at St. Manu's Convent School, Shahkot under the guidance of worthy President Mr. Ashok Jain , Secretary Prof. Gurdev Sahai ,Principal Ms.Ritu Pathak,Administrator Mr.Pardeep Kumar and Vice Principal Ms.Harbinder Kaur Hayer.Bhai Pal Singh France ,representative of Darbar-e-Punjab organization and Rajinder Singh Purewal ,Editor of Punjab Times(U.K.) presided over there as the special guests. Total 46 students participated enthusiastically (9th to 12th)in the competition which was organised in two groups (Group -1 (9th -10th),Group -2(11th-12th) and they expressed their views in Punjabi on the Topic 'True Friendship 'and The Role of Mother Tongue'. In first group Gurmeen Kaur, Mannat and Jasmeen Kaur Marok ,however in second group Gurleen Kaur, Sukhmanpreet Kaur and Komal Sachdeva stood First,second and third respectively.All the participants were felicitated with certificates for their active participation.
While speaking, Bhai Pal Singh and Rajinder Singh Purewal, editor of Punjab Times UK, said that knowledge of other languages ??is not harmful, but under the influence of other languages, we should not forget the importance of our mother tongue. Principal Ms.Ritu Pathak and Administrator Mr.Pardeep Kumar appreciated the efforts of all the representatives of this movement and reiterated that such initiatives should be continued so that children stay connected with their land and heritage.Also they urged the students to love and respect their mother tongue.
